CPU use during bootup and safe mode?

Posted 21 November 2014 - 08:13 AM

Hello

Quick question. When booting up a server / Workstation with multiple CPU's, Are all CPU's in use as soon as you turn on the system? or do the other CPU's come on line afterwards?

Also, Does safe mode (in any of the Win versions) use multiple CPU's or just one?

Thanks

I would figure the OS would operate as it would normally - all the current cores required for the processing load.

As with safemode - again I figure the hardware is using what ever cpus are available. It would not make sense to have an OS state, like safe mode, affect the hardware. Much like I do not expect safemode to not use my full eight gigs of RAM, but instead use four.

Now I have to ask - what's the reason for the questions? There has to be an interesting back story.

One of the (old) Computed Image Reconstruction servers is failing to bootup and goes into a reboot loop. It fails as soon as it loads the 6to4 driver. (The 6to4 driver does not get loaded an a Good CIRs)

* We can boot into safe mode with no problems.
* Hardware test shows everything as good.
* if you remove one CPU it boots fine.

The engineers have been working on this more than I have so this is all I know.

Didn't get a solid answer to my question, but as far as the CIRS system, it turned out to have a bad motherboard (not sure exactly what was bad on the motherboard)

I would have recommended checking Windows Event viewer. Safe Mode will boot the OS with the lowest amount of software required to run the system. Any number of drivers could have been loaded causing the kernel to puke it guts out. That being said, I can only guesstimate that hardware wise, the OS isn't going to dictate the processing of the CPU's, which is what your question pre-leads into the answer.

Also are these servers actually dual processor, or multi-core, or a combination of both? Either way, architecture is still architecture, & safe mode or not, you are not going to alter that with the OS.

yes and yes, they are muliti core and multi cpu's (the motherboard had 2 6-core cpus)
