Windows 10 Tech preview

Posted 10 December 2014 - 10:39 AM

I thought it might be nice to have a central thread for the new Windows 10 tech preview.

So who (besides myself) has it running, in what capacity, what have you seen so far, etc. ?

I've put it into a VMware Workstation 11 virtual machine, to let me test new projects against it. This is how I remote-debug my applications against Win7/8/10.

I've only installed it an hour ago. So far I've only noticed that:
  • It installed faster than Win8
  • Only needed to do 1 round of on-line update/reboot

It's on my list to get installed... both at home and work.

I'm not sure about anyone else but one of the last update on my win7 box put a Win10 icon in my notification bar indicating I can reserve my update now. It's looking like the July drop is happening.

Anyone get this, or reserving their update now?

I believe that everyone should be seeing the "reserve" update, at least unless you manually install updates and chose not to install that one. From what I have read Windows 10 will be released on July 29th. My plan is to either purchase a license for 10, or one for (7, or 8.1 -- whichever is cheapest) and install it on a VM so I can decide what I want to do over the course of the year with my primary machine before having to make any more major decisions (since if my primary machine doesn't work I'll be pissed -- but if a VM is borked it doesn't matter as much).

Now I just need to get a Windows 7/8.1/10 license for said VM (though I would love it if they just promoted the dev preview to full license when release happens...).

Remember the golden rule of Windows upgrades: Don't do it before SP1!
