Retrieving the SMPTE timecode (GOP timecode)

Post icon  Posted 29 October 2007 - 04:02 PM

Hello,

I need to retrieve programmatically the GOP timecode (SMPTE timecode) from MPEG2 video-files and associate them with each frame. I'm using ffmeg to decode and access the MPEG2 frames, but I cannot find any info on how to retrieve the timecodes. I also need to retrieve any other meta-data embedded in these files. I could also switch to DirectShow to extract the timecodes if ffmpeg is not the right sollution.

I appreciate your imput,
PixelRain

What DVD editing software are you guys using?

I found that some files may not have a GOP timecode:

Other problem with GOP timecode is that by specification it is not required to be present in the mpeg file, the file plays fine without it. Some encoders (very few actually) may not put the timecode, or the timecode may be totally wrong.

It looks like you would have to add the GOP time code yourself. The program DVD-lab says that it can do that, I've never used it, so you will have to check it out. DVD-lab

I guess you will have to ripe the DVD to your hard drive and then re-record it to a new DVD with the GOP timestamp added to it.

The original question referred to programming and ffmpeg - i have tied a number of libraries, but quite confident now that ffmpeg and mlt defiantly dont return the actual time code. any suggestions?
