What is this on my motherboard

Posted 13 January 2015 - 05:22 AM

Hey guys, So I had a old POS alienware comp I was trying to rebuild. I was wondering what this piece is on the motherboard.
At first glance I thought it was the onboard graphics card but I have to graphics cards hooked up that came with the alienware... When I turn this comp on though, The fan ontop of this heatsink is so freaking loud its crazy and I have no idea what its actually trying to cool.

In the pictures what Im talking about is the orange heatsink with the little asus fan on it.

I would highly recommend not removing any fans on proprietary equipment.

If it's making noise, then likely it has a bad barring. Yes, that should be replaced.

"alienware p5n-d heatsink "

under the massive heatsink of the P5N-D are the NB chip and the PCIe2 controller

I had a old POS alienware comp

That looks to be some sort of water/fluid cooled cpu setup. When was the last time those fluids were flushed on this "old POS"?
