What got you into computers
Posted 15 November 2007 - 03:23 PM
For me, it was when my Grandpa built me a computer. This was when I was about 10, so I thought it was way more complex than it actually was. He built it in a couple of weeks and that amazed me. Thats when I first got into computers. I started out with computer building and repair classes, then web design, and now programming.

It would have to be when my step dad got a computer for xmas and would play games like police and kings quest. Nothing like a little stick figure arresting some stick figure scrub for being wreckless at the local bar. Then when I went to my friend's house once and he was online chatting with people and making fun of some of them and them getting mad. It was pretty funny.
Then when I had graduated from high school, my parents game me internet access. It was the day when I was reborn to the shadows of the net and my life of darkness began. I shall never forget it.

Nothing ever got me into computers right away, I transitioned over years. My first computer ever was a quantex in 1997. Blazing fast speeds of a couple hundred MHz. That was when I was young and it was more of my dads, but I was allowed to use it. I was never really afraid to do crap that could harm the computer. I have, since 1997, only broken 3 computers and one of them i fixed. I just really used a computer a lot and got better and learned how to do stuff with it. Just this last six months though have I really buckled down with computers and started learning stuff such as VB .net and HTML and CSS.

i think i was caught staying up too late on my computer one night for like the 100th time so i was grounded for a month from it over summer break. i got bored one day because of the lack of computing power and wandered into my dad's office. i pulled a c++ book off of his bookshelf and boom hacked my first gibson at 15.

When I was 11 my mother got the family computer. An 8088 with 2 5'1/4 drives, no hard drive, no modem. Just some boot disks & a book for Dos 3.3. She says "Here, show us how to use it after you've figured it out". I actually had more fun diving into the file structure & accessing the files than I did actually playing the games. That was around 1989, fast forward to 1996, a friend & myself built our own PCs (3 identical to one another except mine had a CD-R). Then I got a laptop to throw Linux on. I've been programming, fixing, & developing ever since.

Agreed.
So where's the story about switching back to Capty99, Tyler James Lee?

My folks got the household a computer when I was maybe 7 or 8 (I think). A Tandy 1000, with a 5 1/4" floppy drive, no hard disk, and a whopping 256k of RAM. Dad brought home a book of BASIC games, and I was off. Took a hiatus for a while, from maybe ages 12-19, but then got back into it in college and grad school when some courses I took required first Mathematica, and then MATLAB.
Wish I still had that old machine. I sometimes wonder what I could do with it now.

I've been playing pc games for as long as I remember. My first game was the original Doom! As for programming, I took a web design (basic HTML) course in highschool because I heard it was an easy 'A'. It was, but it also sparked my interest in programming and I decided to major in Comp. Science. I took basic Java and am in C right now.
