is it possible to change the laptop graphic card ?

Posted 15 May 2015 - 10:15 AM

In 2013 I bought a new HP laptop this the specs:
intel i7 2.40 ghz (8core)
12 GB ram
intergrated graphics intel 4000
nvidia geforce gt630m 2gb
1TB c drive
30 GB D drive (maybe 27,not so sure)
win 8 (updated to 8.1 now)

when i bought it, i thought that the gt630m was a 'gaming beast' and all i didnt know about fps and all of that but now i known its a low end card. so is it possible to change the graphics card ? and also how can i know what graphic card can i buy to replace the card i have ?

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

I think you can change the video card to another one.
I have a Nvidia GeForce GT720M wich runs GTA 5, CODBO2 on 60FPS
But if you want a gaming beast go for a higher video card like
the 800 Series or 900 Series if you put a Nvidia GeForce GTX980m in your laptop then it will be a beast of a laptop.

for your second question.
every video card of Nvidia that is in the M series will fit in your laptop. idk about AMD.

I would advocate looking at any tear down posts of that specific (unknown to us) model of laptop. See if there is any indication if you can.. and also eyeball any specific power requirements new cards will need. Lord knows you don't want to burn it out.

this is my laptop:

model: HP ENVY dv6-7295ex Notebook PC

also i found a that the gt630m and gtx765m have the same 28nm tech. the only thing that the gtx765m uses 60-65 watts (gt630m uses 35 watts)

gt630m specs:

gtx765 specs:

so is it possible ?

I didn't see much of a definitive guts on it, or if it is a soldered in chip or an actual card.. *shrug* Look up what the current card/chip as a standalone buy.. I am guessing an actual chip-chip..

If you can find one (and it looks like it slides into something) then you have a chance.. of course any upgrade means the specs that laptop was built for go out the window in terms of heat, power, etc.

Have you eyeballed the difficulty in dis assembly?

One of the chips you referenced was being sold with a 'soldering operation skill' warning. This means the other chips would have to be de-soldered and a new one dropped in. That maybe out side of your end of the skill pool.

Over all - I would suggest no.. don't go mucking around if you are unsure on the process.

Well it doesn't look that bad actually as long as you are fairly technical

this alienware gpu upgrade is fairly easy to follow.

Must have the correct tools, heat sink pads and paste clean cloths before you start and remember

lefty loosey, righty tighty.
