Apple Tv's Airplay & Programming

Posted 12 June 2015 - 11:41 PM

Hey guys and girls,

Was just curious if anyone is or has used an apple tv's airplay to assist their coding. (Mac Programming of course). I am considering getting an apple tv and using its airplay feature to another tv as an external monitor. Im just wondering if it's fluid or not? Have you noticed and lag or problems? Interested in hearing thoughts and remarks. Thanks all.

I knew someone who threw an apple at a TV once, does that count?

Why not just buy a second monitor? I bet it will be a whole lot cheaper than an Apple TV.

well they're down to like $70, but yea, why not just get another monitor? TVs are terrible for computer use - which I don't understand. Why are TVs such shit compared to monitors, and so much more expensive?

The market bears expensive TVs, and they always have new gimmicks to try and sell more, like 3D or a curved screen or whatever. The basic principle is that you're stupid for selling something for $100 if someone is willing to pay $500 for it. People are willing to buy expensive TVs, therefore TVs are expensive.

Right. I mean I get that, I'm just boggled by the people who buy them, I guess.

My brother bought my mom a "smart TV" for Christmas and convinced me to chip in on it. It has all these features he says, it connects to the internet, blah blah blah, I'm like ok cool, lets get it. So we split the price on it.

That TV cost more than any two of my monitors. And it's a total piece of shit. Terrible WIFI reception, NO network port at all, the remote is complete crap. Built in Youtube and Netflix android apps - but they're now outdated versions of the apps that won't update and I'm just waiting for them to break completely. No Amazon, or even internet, no recording, nothing. It's utter garbage.

Oh and the maximum resolution that this 32" TV can render? 720p.

Its color balance is piss poor, the black bleeds out and makes any dark movie (we tried Godzilla and Olympus Has Fallen) completely unwatchable.

I suggested we take it back, but my mom insists she likes it, so whatever.

This year I'm going to get my siblings to go in on it and get her a 32" Monitor and a mini-PC.

Well hopefully the TV will at least record everything you say and send it off to some server.

Appreciate the feedback from everyone. The main reason I was considering the apple tv was because I like a really neat workspace. If I can prevent the use of more cables then I try to not use them because Im a neat freak like that haha.

The lag is pretty poor for a straight mirror to be honest. I attempted to use my Apple TV in this way and gave up pretty quickly. It's great for what it's supposed to be used for though, and an excellent way to mirror your ios device when testing.
