What do you know about security(aka: hacking)

Posted 20 November 2007 - 03:21 PM

I've been learning about it for about a month. If you understand programming and web design, its not hard to learn. I could probably do something to an insecure website, but I'm not gonna try. What do you know about it? How long have you been doing it? If you could say one thing to those stupid script kiddies who call themselves hackers, what would it be?

I would say don't post questions asking for help doing this on a programming site, like this one.
If you can't figure it out on your own, you probably should be attempting it.
Everyone that is even half-way decent at it learned it all on their own by reading old manuals about routers and such.
For more information, consult your video store and watch the movie Hackers.

Sploitcast.com

Although my knowledge on the subject is minimal, I used to hang out with those guys on irc and we used to talk about all sorts of geeky shit. I even participated in a couple of roundtables.

I'm the one that sounds like a retard.

Then I stopped giving a crap and left. But it was fun.

Because the video store is the best place for consultation.

I would never associate with the like even if i was into it. I know enough to prevent the simple stuff. Even had month on how to do it in a web applications course in univ.
I understand the desire to make code do what it was not intended to do, but causing destruction or theft, even due to misunderstanding or a lack of knowledge to anyone but yourself is just stupid, sorry.

It does make a good movie line though, good call Thorian, also just watched the new Die Hard, also not a bad showcase of the idea :P

1st u got to have a medium of communication
second a device to interrupt signals
third tool to get it done in a convenient way
fourth you have to be there watching full time
and of course and electricity

build your satellite,hire astronauts to repair it if not working properly
buy or make computer, build telephone company(if u like wires), build blackbox or go to the nearest phoneboot andcut green and red wires and start callingand the code is listed below:

 #include <iostream>

using namespace std;
int main
{cout<<"hello"
cin>>"hello";
cout<<"sorry wrong number";
return 0;}

There are plenty of 'challenge' websites that allow you to hack into them.
I remember finishing all levels of try2hack.nl a year ago.
Nowadays, even with the right set of tools you can perform a basic attack. It's getting harder to differentiate between script kiddies and real hackers.

I'm more interested in processor level security than web security; so I'm still a script kiddie of web hacking ;)

Didn't say i never did it ;)
finished a couple of sites like hackthissite.org, at least that's what it used to be called.
I found the programming challenge sections interesting, gave me ideas and things to learn, but I would never submit any code to a site like that... i don't really want to encourage them.
