Would like help choosing which language is best.

Posted 16 September 2015 - 02:23 AM

Hello I am going to be writing what i think may be considered a daemon which sits on a server and checks for new entries in a database every 5 minutes and then notifies the sales team of new leads. It will do the following:

Sit on server could be linux or windows.

check sql database every five minutes for new leads
if (new subscribers/leads)
contact sales team

at end of day
backup database
save to excel spreadsheet or something similar

The programming is still in the planning stage i am not sure exactly what i want it to do yet but this gets the jist of it
I was wondering which language would be best to write this in because it must be able to run on linux or windows

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

any language that has a Linux/Windows compiler/interpreter qualifies.

if you canít decide, go for JavaScript :P

Python, Java, Javascript(NodeJs) even Ruby will all do the job.

Personally I would use Python and set it up under a cron job or something similar. Has good libraries for interacting with Excel spreadsheets as well (the other choices probably do as well but I've used Python for it a number of times).

Really just use whichever you are most comfortable with.
