Single 980 Ti or 2 way SLI for a 144hz 1080p monitor?

Posted 24 September 2015 - 01:29 PM

Well, I am used to a crappy TN 1080p monitor that can do 60hz. There is a huge ghosting issue because of the 6ms response time. I'm looking to upgrade my monitor, and I found a really good one. I play games like Elite: Dangerous, Planetside 2, etc... Since I have a 144hz monitor, I would like to run as close to 144 FPS as possible. If I'm under that, I have no clue if triple buffered v-sync would make it look any better or not. So, should I get two in SLI, or is one enough?

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

Or you could get a Gsync enabled monitor and then you wouldn't have to worry about tearing even if you didn't make the 144fps.

Mkay.. one other question - which monitor are you using? Do you have the old 60hz or the 144hz?

Oops. I mixed myself up. I have the 60hz monitor right now. ASUS VS228H-P or something like that.

I would figure SLI of decent cards would more than do the trick, but I honestly find dropping $600 on videocard overkill. Let alone poking at two of them.

That's why I'm going to use the website which lets you lease video cards. Sure, you pay 200 more than usual at the end of the term, but you can upgrade whenever you want and the payments are pretty low.

So would a single 980ti provide 144 fps (on most games since the fps is variable)? I can get two, but if one will give me a good fps that looks smooth on the 144hz monitor with no tearing with vsync, I think one will be good.

I had never heard of a site that leased video cards.. or any component for that matter.

Also, if I cap the fps at 60 on a 144hz monitor with vsync turned on, will there be any artifacts? Like on a 60hz monitor with vsync on and the fps is lower than 60, it gets choppy.

That's asking a whole mess of specific questions on abstracted hand waving that you can best find the answer by reading up on reviews and commentary on the specific make and model of the video card you are looking at. Tomshardware tends to be a great place for checking out things being put to task.
