Well, okay, you have a point in that it is a rather modern convention. In Roman times there was little consistency... IV or IIII to get 4, IX or VIIII to get 9? Why not. IIX to get 8? Sure, go ahead. We're Romans, we can do whatever we want. We are the Master Race! :P

Isn't XXXIX 39?

Well... I guess if you want to be pedantic about it, haha.

Apparently super bowl 49 is XLIX, not XXXXIX, because you're not supposed to repeat a numeral more than 3 times. According to the modern rules, anyway.

Also, apparently the NFL decided that instead of Super Bowl L, they're just going with Super Bowl 50. So ends the rule of Roman numerals. I would have preferred Super Bowl IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII, but I guess that's why I'm not in marketing.

Here is my take on it. Grab the input and use the number as an index into a lookup table.
NASM and 64 bit Linux

Got it in 10 lines of code and still readable:
Yes i can change the input to a $_GET['number'] wich will let you type the number in the address bar.
