We watched Galaxy Quest on Netflix last night. I love Alan Rickman. I hate Tim Allen. It was an emotional 90 minutes.

Tried In the Heart of the Sea and The Last Witch Hunter, but I couldn't make it through either one of them. Kind of disappointing.

I finally saw the Martian the other night. I loved the book, and I have to say that after seeing it on a screen, I'm feeling a(nother) pang of remorse at switching from physics to programming when I went back to school. CIS isn't exactly on the list of desired fields for astronaut applicants...

We watched Ridiculous 6 and A Million Ways to Die in the West last weekend. In some ways, they were very much the same movie.

We rented Muppets Most Wanted last night. For the first time ever, I was disappointed by the Muppets. Granted, it had its moments of Muppet gold, but for the most part... it sucked. :(

I saw The Revenant. Didn't think it was that great. I liked the new Star Wars prior to that, because it had the effect of reminding me that I enjoy movies.

watched a new preview for Suicide Squad. It leaves my fears about Will Smith unresolved - but on the bright side it didn't confirm them. The attitude he put into the one? two? lines of dialogue he has in the trailer are dead-on Deadshot. So I'm hopeful on that front.

Harley's lines pretty much confirmed my suspicion on how she'd be played and chased off fear that her crazy would be played fluffy instead of scary. So I'm also hopeful there.

Flag seemed dead on, too. He's a fun character that's never really broken out of the comics that I can think of. His name was mentioned in list of Suicide Squad inmates on Arrow at the same time Harley was shown, but then the movie got started and the SS spin-off was put on hold (leading to Legends of Tomorrow instead, which so far looks awesome as fuck).

I am concerned by the amount of Joker in the trailer. It seems to me that he should be a back seat character - I had expected his presence to be limited to one scene: Harley's introduction. I figured she would be introduced by how she got arrested, which would be by delaying Batman while Mr. J got away. I'm hoping it's just that they showed multiple parts of that scene through the trailer to try and hype the new Batman reboot.

I'm actually kind of interested in this. It may be the first movie I actually decide I need to see in the theater.

I haven't even seen the new Star Wars yet, as cool as it sounds. I really hate theaters.

Zero issues with Wil Smith as Deadshot.

A little sad Harley Quinn is the new origin one, but so it goes.

As long as they keep it light hearted and paced like Guardians of the Galaxy they can't do wrong.

My concern has been that Will Smith has 3 characters: Comedy Will (Men in Black, Wild Wild West), Drama Will (Bagger Vance, Seven Pounds, Hitch), and Action Will(Independence Day, I Am Legend, I, Robot). They're interchangeable, static characters between movies. Exactly the same affectations between Independence Day, I Am Legend, and I, Robot - for instance. The characters are distinct between movies, sure, by name and story - but not by presence.

I expect Deadshot to be added to the list of interchangeable Action Will characters. Which makes me sad, because it misses out on a lot of Deadshot's personality.

That said, when he spoke he did have all the ego and attitude of Deadshot - but that's also the same ego and attitude he has. And who knows, maybe I'll realize he's absolutely perfect for the role because Action Will IS Deadshot. Maybe it'll be amazing. I hope it is. And maybe I'll be impressed with Will Smith as an actor for the first time ever.

And if they keep it light (which DC is not known for), he may be a perfect fit because the darker parts of Deadshot may never come up. But I'll be disappointed if it doesn't explore the gray areas that Suicide Squad is so damned good at exploring - like Harley's full understanding that she's codependent in an abusive relationship.

*shrug* I guess I always enjoy Wil Smith and haven't divvied up his world into three boxes. I'm looking forward for his interpretation of the character.

I hope they keep out the Harley back story. Throw a few nods to folks who follow the comic line, but certainly no need to deal with vat-made Harley's background.

Blow shit up.. banter in combat.. deal with over arching evil plans. Team build.
