Caught Bladerunner 2049 last night. Liked it quite a bit. Takes the first movie and runs with concepts damn well.

Spoiler

On a side note - first time I used our Alamo theater and dig that business model quite a bit. Sadly it's a longer hike.. on the plus side the Dolby Atmos thing is no joke. Granted it wasn't in IMAX (Geostorm took that over).. but the audio in the movie was amazing and definitely shined more with this whole Atmos schtick.

Jigsaw - was left disappointed, all the hype of it and it turned out so predictable.

Saw the new Blade Runner. Kind of disappointed. I really had hoped they'd find someone who'd seen and understood the first movie. Instead, they found someone who'd seen the visual design, and explained to them about the bit with the unicorn, and that person returned a stock good robot vs. bad robot movie.
They were able to get a picture with local coherence, I'll give them that. No scene directly contradicted the scene that followed it - but that was about all I could say for it. So much mess in the plot, and so much absence of point.

Went to see Thor: Ragnarok last Tuesday. It was good - lots of comedy and action thrown together.

Took Friday off to see Star Wars. Basically, to avoid spoilers and because, duh, Star Wars.

I quite enjoyed it. I did think there were too many stories running about and pretty much all the characters are as deep as puddles. But, hey, that's Star Wars: I'm sure even the most minor player has their story fleshed out in some extended universe / fanfic.

To say much more would, alas, be a spoiler.

Hm. I think you've helped me formulate Kiparsky's 937th rule: If spoilers spoil it, it's not worth seeing in the first place.

I agree with that rule. Spoilers don't bother me because if it's a good movie they just entice me to go see it more.

I disagree... or maybe not. If a movie is ruined because a plot point is revealed then yes, it's probably a weak movie but I find spoilers don't ruin the movie per se but the movie watching experience. It's like a whole Zen thing, where spoilers create an expectation that undermines the enjoyment of not knowing whats about to happen.

I don't support the rule - suspense is a big part of my enjoyment of any story. It gets ruined for me if I know what's happening. It's also a reason I don't often enjoy re-reading or re-watching something.
