What were Steve Jobs talents?

Posted 14 January 2016 - 04:21 AM

Even after I listened to Isaacson's bio on Jobs which is definitive since Jobs gave Isaacson all access, 40 hours of interviews and Jobs was not even allowed to see the final manuscript, I still have trouble figuring out what his talents were. It seems that he was a modest coder and a modest computer engineer but that he was more good at getting work out of people and he was also good at seeing the big picture and how everything fit together.

Was that your sole resource? Entering your topic title into a search engine produces lots of articles. E.g.

Was Steve Jobs Talented?

Quote

This is what 10,000 hours of practice gives you: products which change the world and 97% approval from your employees. Steve Jobs wasn't a lone genius, he simply practiced much harder then most other people.

This is the internet age, resources are limitless, as are opinions.

He was an excellent salesman, marketer, and slave-driver.

He never invented shit, he never innovated a single thing. There were mp3 players before the ipod, there were computers before the mac, there were smart phones before the iphone, tablets before the ipad. There is literally nothing new that has come out of that company, ever. He just did an amazing job of convincing his cult of 'geniuses' that it was all his invention.

And he made them think they needed a new version of each of their $300-500 toys every year.

On top of that, Apple only paid lip service to addressing slavery in their supply chain before he died - it wasn't until after that they started actually investigating and requiring more than a signature from their supplier. His commentary on the matter was that it's hard to be certain (so fucking what?) and is "a difficult problem."

Mostly, the ability to convince others he wasn't full of crap. This defining attribute has been dubbed Reality Distortion Field.

The RDF proved more powerful than one could reasonably expect, extending even into death.

It's unclear if he possessed any other exceptional skills, but he made the most of that one. Were he more religious he might have been a cult leader. Though, in a sense, he managed one of the most successful cults of all time.

Welp, I think you all pretty much covered it. It's telling that somebody thought Ashton Kutcher was the right guy to play him.

Steve Jobs excelled at screwing Steve Wozniak and at parking in handicapped spaces (presumably while handicapped people made handicapped faces).

The more I dig into the history the more I feel that Wozniak is under-appreciated:

(wikipedia)

Quote

On June 29, 1975 Wozniak tested his first working prototype, displaying a few letters and running sample programs. It was the first time in history that a character displayed on a TV screen was generated by a home computer.

Quote

He alone designed the hardware, circuit board designs, and operating system for the Apple I.

Quote

After the success of the Apple I, Wozniak designed the Apple II, the first personal computer that had the ability to display color graphics, and BASIC programming language built-in.

Sure there is! For example, there are whole communities of Tzotzil corn farmers in the highlands of Chiapas who he never screwed over even a little bit.
