So, I've found the perfect job. How do I make sure they hire me...

Posted 02 February 2016 - 05:23 AM

Okay, so I have lived out in America for the past 6/7 years. This is where I have done my schooling and where I have built 5 years of experience in software engineering. I am intending to move back to England, I think I brought this up in another post, to be with my son. I have been looking for work there but as of yet none have responded.

So, I was just sifting through job opportunities there and I found the perfect one. It is 20 minute drive from where I'll be initially setting up camp and a 10 minute drive from my son. The refer to themselves as a family friendly place and offer variable hours so that you are not required to always work should you have family.

The variable hours should not matter to me but it shows that they appreciate the value of family, not only this but it is a small company which is something I've been wanting to get back to. Especially after working for such a large corporation on such a soulless task.

So, given they want someone in the UK how do I convince them to pick me from across the pond and let me work for them when I get there?

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

You explain in your cover letter that you will be moving to the UK.

Then it should progress like a normalish interview.

Okay, is there any resource you know of to translate an American Resume into an English CV would both be acceptable for an English application?

I am not sure what you were expecting. Have your, I guess US resume, look at the British resume samples and articles about what should be in there, make updates as needed. I would wager there wouldn't be many, or any, changes.

From my experience (with American companies), there is no sure-fire way. Some places want someone to do multiple in-person interviews, & the idea of travel to accomplish this they either don't believe you or don't wish to risk it. Some places shy away because they fear someone would be home-sick & not work out, or not actually be brave enough to relocate. However that being said, I was able to relocate across multiple states, but it did take me looking at a number of companies.

My only suggestion is to gently remind them that you've already relocated & you are looking to return, make it sound like your goal is permanent. This maybe will clear the air on the situation.

But there is no magic phrase, no single "this will work with every situation, with any company" that you're going to be able to drop & force them to understand.

Also, just to follow up with more experience, I was working at a place that did a buyout of a company from another state. They offered to hire some of the employees & pay for relocation. One of them worked out, & worked out well. The other... while he was actually working out well, after being paid for relocation & having been there less than a calendar month, he just logged out of his phone, put his feet up & browsed the internet. He was walked out by security 3 days later. His plan was to get relocation paid for, & then fuck off until fired, & collect severance pay. The reason I'm bringing this up? While your views are on your goals, your family, relocation, etc, you need to see the viewpoint of the company you are up against. While you say "they are family oriented" a company exists to make money. All of your needs come 2nd. Always. I like to look at things from the larger picture, to see both sides, desires, needs, goals, & make a plan with that in mind.
