I suggest you look into what is known as the Java Media Framework (JMF for short). It is a set of APIs that allow you to build streaming video applications with Java. You have to download and install this framework so that you can create video players and such that can play mpg, mov etc along with certain sound clip types.

Below is a link to a page that shows you a bunch of information about the framework, from there you can go on to the second link to actually download and install it. The site pages also have links to example code for things like a TV java application etc.
