Security Issue regarding Data Insertion Using WCF Service?

Posted 23 March 2016 - 01:27 PM

Hello Guys,

I've created WCF service which returns data(Select query) from DB. I've done it and its no problem, because its just selecting data from DB and not making any changes to DB.
Now, I've to create a WCF Service which inserts Data to DB. Anyone who uses that Service can insert data into DB. I wanna know that how do i restrict that only specific people should be able to enter data.

1- Inserting Data using WCF Service is fine? or is it bad?
2- If i insert data using wcf service, how can i put restrictions? your opinions?
3- how do i host WCF service on server? as web app? or what?

PS. i'm working on Bio-metric voting system, using winform for registrations and for voting purpose android.

Thank you

1) Sure, a WCF service that modifies a database is fine.

2) There's several authentication methods. .Net even includes built in authentication methods:

3) You can host it as a web application in IIS, or you can host it as a dedicated service on the server itself. Google and you'll find tuts on how to setup either. You'll probably end up doing it as a web app since you're hosting up other web applications.
