Beginner's Anxiety and Preparation Questions!

Posted 13 April 2016 - 11:59 PM

Hello DREAM IN CODE!! I am so happy to be on such a throughly established website. I am pushing for a career in IT. It has always been a hobby of mine, but only on the PC repair side of things. I want to know if programming could be useful for my IT career. Or is it the opposite? Should I focus on throughly understaing the physical aspect of computers, and then move on to programming? I am having so much anxiety, because I really did not do anything school related since high school and I am now 26 years old. However, I am intellectually gifted, BUT i seriously took that for advantage. Any words of advice or encouragement would be so helpful!

Moved to the corner cubicle since this is not C/C++ specific.

I want to know if programming could be useful for my IT career.

Depends where you want to go, but it certainly cannot hurt.

Or is it the opposite?

Why would you think it would hurt?

Should I focus on throughly understaing the physical aspect of computers, and then move on to programming?

Again - it depends where you want to go.

Hey modi! Thank you for the response! I want to end up with a CCNP, which I can achieve rather quickly I believe. My overall aim is to go into the security aspect of the IT industry, such as CIISP, and I read quite a lot about ethical hacking. I would guess programming is involved a great deal in that area.

Yeah, sorry. So I am now studying for my A+ certification with Net+ being next. The CCNP is the most likely route I'm going to take. Will learning to program or code offer me a leg up in the industry? I just built a really beautiful computer for the first time and am studying very hard and thoroughly!

It won't hurt, sure, but mostly in the scripting realm. Networking only goes so far with programming.
