'Related topics' = necromancy

Posted 22 June 2016 - 05:04 AM

By every topic, you'll see below that there are related topics, I expected that those will be current topics, but I just notice that some are even from 2009, if not older. Nobody's expecting a reply from that topic anymore, then why does it happen that I see those?

I see,

I also just realised, it's also good for who are looking for an problem they have that already has an answer,
yet it's not really useful if you want to help people around. but I see the point now.

Thank you.

It's part of the duality of the site - conversations on answer spaces now, and preservation of those conversations for later.

I don't understand why you think its not helpful.

If you ask about making a hangman game... or about building a triangle of asterisks... questions we get a LOT especially from students... Then the advice from 2009 is probably just as helpful as the advice from today. There is no reason for someone to have to write a custom response each every time the same question is asked 100 times a month.

If there is a particular topic that you want to contribute towards you can always consider writing a tutorial, or snippet, or even a blog entry ;)

I meant that if you are willing to help, and want to reply to topics that havn't gotten an answer yet.
But I do understand that topics have been made earlier.

I can see why it's weird. We do encourage people to search and find older threads, but generally when people post on those threads we tell them not to and close it for "necro posting". Really, we need some kind of warning on a post past a certain age: "This post is from X years ago, and it is unlikely that any of the original participants will reply". Something like that.
