Can Shared System Memory compensate for Dedicated Video Memory?

Posted 30 June 2016 - 06:56 PM

Hello,

I heavily apologize if this question is in the wrong section. I was thinking of trying out a PC game in the near future and a question just popped into my head. The game has a requirement: the video card memory has to be 512 MB. I use a Lenovo T400 Thinkpad and the dedicated video memory is 64MB. My shared system memory is 1631 MB. My total graphics memory is 1695 MB. I was wondering if my shared system memory could compensate for my low dedicated video memory.

Thank you for any responses!

Adapter Type: Mobile Intel 4 Series Express Chipset Family (Mocrosoft Corporation - WDDM 1.1)
Chip Type: Mobile Intel 4 Series Express Chipset Family
DAC Type: internal
Adapter String: Mobile Intel GMA 4500MHD
Bios Information: Intel Video BIOS

I do know that my first possible mistake was using a laptop for this game.

How do you have "1631 MB" of RAM?

Attached to this post is a description of my adapter.

On Windows 10, I started at the desktop background -> Right Clicked -> Selected Display Settings -> Clicked on Advanced Display Settings.

I am not a gamer at all so, this is just from reading and/or stuff i knew already about this subject.

The Dedicated Video memory is separate RAM that your video adapter has built into it which is only used by the GPU. The Shared System memory is memory that is shared with the video adapter from your system`s RAM. The drawback with Shared Memory is that it is slower to access than the Dedicated Memory.

So just from what i understand, the game would probably run because there is enough total video memory. However, it would probably suffer from slow/sluggish graphics using such a large amount of Shared memory versus Dedicated memory. How slow or sluggish i can`t say. I guess it would depend on how the game uses the memory.

It appears to me that your graphics adapter really was not designed for gaming but more for general use.
