Animated GIF (Avatar)

Hey All,
Not sure if this is the right topic. How would you make an animated GIF I guess it would be?

Get an image editor that supports creating animated gifs, something like Gimp if you are an OpenSource fan, or Photoshop if you have to money and use google to find a tutorial, or simply try it intuitively (I've succeeded with Gimp in an hour or so).
