There is no feeling of obligation to play fair and get along with the other guy even if his politics differ with yours.

I don't think it was so much the "his politics differ from yours". I think it was the "rape is a-okay with me!" that did it. I mean, the guy's clearly an idiot, nobody's arguing about that. He's lied about literally everything he promised to his voters, I think nobody's really debating that at this point. That's all fine, you believe a liar like that at your peril. If you're willing to buy his line, you're a fool and your folly is your privilege. But when he declares that half of human race is fair game for assault, I stop feeling any obligation to play fair and get along - the man's a scumbag, straight up.

(if that hadn't done it, the fact that he's got the Klan in his corner should really make you think twice about whether you want to make excuses for him - if you're a decent human being, you don't play nice with Nazis)

How did the year go for you?
How about in the personal life?

Personally, fairly decent. I can't say the same for the world though.

Did you make any goals you set?

Yes, I've obtained my Master's Degree and I got a game Greenlit on Steam.

What did you learn that was new or exciting in the programming world?

Research code is the ugliest and messiest code, much worse than any "production code that actually gets shipped".

Single best tech moment?

There weren't any.

How have you grown as a person?

I somehow manage to get things done, now.

What did you think was the most overrated game, book, movie, news story, etc of the year?

Owlboy

Under rated?

Star Wars: Rouge One

What are you looking forward to for next year?

Nothing

Would you rank this a good year or bad?

I'd give it a -4

How did the year go for you?

Meh. A slow, steady improvement in financial situation. Learned a lot (not technically, but about work) at my new job. Otherwise I spent most of the year depressed.

How about in the personal life?

Garbage. Not finding any real satisfaction in anything professionally or personally these days. Trying some new and old things to see if I can feel better about existing.

Did you make any goals you set?

Read several books beyond my goal. Didn't make my project goal, but did complete a lot of project work. I brewed a lot and made some good beers which was nice.

What did you learn that was new or exciting in the programming world?

Nothing. I remain very frustrated at the increased positioning of Javascript as a general-purpose language. It's barely fit for the job of web development and definitely not a better choice for general-purpose work than anything else out there. Most of the tech news I've seen this year has revolved around slightly less (and sometimes more) horrible ways to write Javascript.

Single best tech moment?

The tech community as a whole has felt mostly disappointing this year. Can we do real innovation, please?

How have you grown as a person?

I've learned a lot of things I don't like. I've spent a lot of time figuring out how to waste less time and how to prune potential work/research based on realistic expectations.

What did you think was the most overrated game, book, movie, news story, etc of the year?

No idea. I don't think I hated anything I watched, played, or read.

Under rated?

I though Ben Affleck was a pleasantly good grizzled Batman in Batman vs Superman.

What are you looking forward to for next year?

Not much. Potentially retiring from software if I get lucky. I'm also excited to get back to playing music again (this is unrelated to exiting the software field), though I'm sure that will be a long road.

Would you rank this a good year or bad?

Pretty bad, but the sort of thing that I'm sure I'll live through and look back as a "rebuilding" year. Hopefully 2017 has some bright spots.
