Xampp installer for Linux 32 bit

Posted 18 January 2017 - 06:15 AM

Hello.

I would like to install Xampp on my Linux computer (32 bit) but I can't find a 32 bit installer for Linux. Does anyone know which installer I need for my Linux computer?

Thank you.

You typically don't need something like XAMPP on Linux. Most distros come with their own LAMP packages, that are far simpler to set up.

Which distro are you on?

I have Linux Mint 17.3 Rosa 32-bit.

I'm new to Linux. I use Brackets editor, can I use LAMP with Brackets?

The editor has nothing to do with anything. You can write code in whatever editor you want, it makes no difference.

LAMP is just what we call the classic: Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP combination.
XAMPP is a an easy-to-install version of that, mostly for Windows users. (As Windows doesn't have package managers, like Linux and Mac.)

Mint uses the Debian package management system, as far as I know.
That means you should be able to install any package using the apt-get type of commands.
This is a nice intro to use that system.

I don't have Mint set up anywhere, so I can't test this, but in both Debian and Ubuntu you would do this to install all the LAMP components:
sudo apt-get install apache2 php mysql-server

Of course, Mint could use slightly different names, (like php5 or php7, for example) so you may need to adjust this.

You can always search for pacakges, to see if they really exist, by using apt-cache search.
sudo apt-cache search mysql-server

That will get you a list of packages matching "mysql-server".

Thank you for your answer. I will let you know if it works (or not) on Mint.

OK.

I searched google for: sudo apt-get install apache2 php mysql-server linux mint , and I found this page https://community.li...torial/view/486

I did as descriped on this page. When I type http://localhost it says it works.

When I type http://localhost/phpmyadmin I get the welcome screen.

So far so good I think. The next question I have is how I set up Username/password to log in phpmyadmin. (during installation I set up a password)

In the terminal I restarted apache2 and I got this message: Could not reliably determine the server's fully qualified name.. set the "Servername" directive globally to suppress this message.

Mint isn't a Linux Distribution that I would use for hosting websites.

phpadmin is the web interface that you log into MySql, so phpmyadmin itself does not have user accounts.

Your Apache isn't configured correctly. Did you edit httpd.conf at all? The default values are going to need a servername set, & if you are not hosting an FQDN, then you should use something like the name of the machine.

What do you get from echo ${HOSTNAME}?

Just for clarity & completion, this topic is getting outside of the scope of Linux. "Where do I find 32bit XAMP for Mint" is a valid Linux question. "Help me through setting up Apache & MySql" is really a topic for Webservers & Hosting

Hi no2pencil,

Thank you for your repley.

When i echo ${HOSTNAME} I get maarten-name of machine ....

So you say I have to edit httpd.conf en set the servername to maarten-name of the machine?

And where can I find httpd.conf exactly?

I'm not 100% certain of the location on Mint, & also it depends on which version of Apache you are running. While a command like sudo find / -name httpd.conf will locate it, the fact that you don't know where it is, I find troubling. Only because this means you 100% have not edited the file yet. Are you not following a walkthrough on how to setup Apache? Or are we just kind of figuring this out as we go?

I'm following the instructions on this page: https://community.li...torial/view/486

I installed apache2, when I type /etc/apache2/ $ ls I don't see the httpd.conf file.

Apologies, you don't see it because the config for this version is going to be apache2.conf

Thank you for providing the link.

What does the following output provide?

grep -i servername /etc/apache2/apache2.conf

Yes, I just figured that out. I have the file open of my screen now.

Do you mean: User ${APACHE_RUN_USER}

or is it something else I have to config now?

Honestly, I'm not familiar with this version of Apache, & wouldn't be the best source. It starts getting into "usable version of site" & stuff. Again, as I stated earlier, I wouldn't use this setup for hosting. But that's me, preference, & experience.

I'm sure some of our other Apache experts will be along to help you. I would suggest opening a new topic under Web Hosting & Servers, as you are asking specific questions on Apache & have moved beyond the topic of Linux & software installation.

Ok, I will open a new topic. I would like to thank both of you for your help so far.

O btw, I am not want to put something online. I just want to make a simple HTML site with some PHP. A little learning project :-)
