Nobody did that. Betawar suggested a more natural electric problem, as he was sceptic about static electricity. I now understand that my UPS was making noise because it's a cheap model which dies right after the first surge (proving that my electric network is subject to surges)

I didn't have time to make my tests yesterday. I will during the week end.
My neighbours will start to wonder why I keep rubbing my ass against my seat XD

There aren't two winters alike in Paris but this year is clearly not a "rainy season". It is cold and dry. At some point my hands got so dry the skin started to crackle and bleed. Moreover, since the room is heated, the cold and dry air coming from outside sucks the remaining humidity as it rises in temperature, amplifying the problem (not to mention the mechanical ventilation, which you can't turn completely off, continually renewing the dry air.).

Forgot to mention that static electricity is my hypothesis and, like any hypothesis, it can be replaced by a better one if it doesn't resist testing.

PSU replacement was mentioned....

not UPS...

https://www.google.c...in+france+today

brings up 63%rH as the quoted figure with a 9 deg c and scattered showers in france.

and here in bonny scotland its

https://www.google.c...ity+in+scotland

which makes me think you're being a bit of a girl with all the dry cold hands bit..

I'm still in a T-Shirt but we are all mental here anyway...

Don't worry, I read replies in my own thread ;)

Last week was cold in Paris (minimum temperature : -3.5C ; maximum temperature : 0.8C ; rain : 0.0mm ; official readings). It is just starting to get warmer and more humid. I don't know how long it will last. Other times winter is very rainy... it's never the same. You don't see snow every year (it's kind of rare now, less so in the past).

Relative humidity is relative to the dew point, which is relative to temperature. 5 C air at 80% relative humidity will have a relative humidity of 30% at 20 C. You Can't read relative humidity directly. A website like this one will give the impression that summers are dryer than winters but if you acount for the difference in temperature you come to the opposite conclusion. Of course, weather is way more complicated than temperature.

I don't think anyone has claimed a surge protector and/or a UPS "cure everything".

Why did anyone recommend a UPS or surge protector for static electric problems? Most discussions of electrical anomalies eventually get someone recommending a protector or a UPS.

Simply because I don't believe the issues is caused by ESD.

No wonder why the Scottish are so proud: your sky is so low it touches your Ben Nevis hillock, so you tell yourself it's high and you call the French pussies. How adorable :rolleyes2:

No one is calling you a pussy...

calm down mon cher...

The low Northern sky is something that cannot be helped..

I just cannot see how your problem can be caused by ESD or dry Air...

All my own built PC's are fine no ESD happening here and my point is it is less Humid here than Paris, France and its colder.

But then I'm an Engineer and know what I'm doing.

Replace the PSU for the Love of God they can be obtained on ebay for next to nothing anyway.

And the Scots are very proud...

God knows why It's just the way it is...

French are neurotic
Scots are very proud

Hehe, don't worry, my humour is super weird but I never mean harm and I'm not easily offended.
I did "climb" the Ben Nevis by the way and yes the top was above what could be called a cloud. it's what makes the landscapes so awesome there, the land is eaten by mist, the light changes all the time and as I've been told there "if you don't like the weather, wait 5 minutes".

But it's damn wet there snoopy (at least when I came). it's what I meant. You live on an island, surrounded by water. Often in Paris we get wind from Russia, which has a continental climate. It changes everything.

But I take your advice. I just see no correlation with the USB sound but if it has been damaged in some way and is not safe any more I'm not taking any chance.

Hello,

I wanted to give some update but I haven't been able to reproduce the problem.

I would not want to be accused of confusing causality and correlation buuuuut I can't resist the urge to bring to your attention the fact that the only parameter which seems to have changed since I have reported the problem is the temperature, which today is 10C warmer than the 25th of January, and of course the humidity (it's been raining for a while, and it's warmer. Combo!). IIII am well aware that no conclusion should be drawn from such a simplistic observation, that the environment isn't controlled blablabla, buuuuut my little finger tells me it's relatively safe to assume a relation.

Snoopy, I can't answer your question: the sound is produced by Windows. it is this one : https://www.youtube....h?v=5X2sl88GFiA the same you hear when you unplug a USB device, but it can apply to other things I guess.

My guess is that you are most likely holding your mouse while your pants rub on your on your chair. The charge may be finding a path to ground through your mouse, thus disrupting the USB causing it to disconnect.
