Putty - Can't backspace from recent commands.

Posted 13 February 2017 - 09:33 PM

The backspace works fine when I'm typing a new command, but when I press up to go back to a command I'm not able to backspace. Control-H just only goes left. I've read that terminals can interpreter keyboard codes differently, but I don't know why it would happen only on recent commands.

Do what I do... Install a Linux VM where you are actually dealing with a real terminal window?

I can't install that on my work computer. I don't know what the difference is between putty and a linux terminal.

what is the output of echo $SHELL

I wonder if you are not using ksh or something, & it's behaving like it's in vi.

It says /bin/ksh. Maybe it is acting like vi because when I press dd it deletes the whole line. But when I press i for insert it doesn't backspace.

If your shell is ksh, then pressing i, will put you into insert mode, & allow you to make edits to the command, such as backspace to erase.

Or you can do cool stuff, like ^ to jump to the front of the line, & then dw to delete an entire word, cw to change a word, c3w to change 3 words, change the position to the next word with w. But it's a lot ot get used to, when you could just change your default shell in /etc/passwd.

It's not working like that when I press i.

Thanks I'll try changing the shell in a bit.
