I am more familiar with Java and C++, i think learning Java and C++ at the same time may not cause your brain an overload,Because Java and C++ has almost the same codes.

By that definition, all languages are the same. All have decision structures, all have loops, all have variables. But the syntax for all is not the same.

Except for my language I am developing. It will knock out c++, java, python, cgi, vb6, lisp, and chef. My structures burn the trash pile that is the old cruft of loops, logical syntax and crutches that are variables to all be replaced with the new black-diamond standard of computing.. just like it should have been years ago.

I then got into a masters program and the main language seems to be Java. I won't be able to take some courses without learning Java therefore am not sure if I should stuff Python and move to Java?

If your curriculum is focused on Java, then yes learn Java

Then my friend said C++ was the best vs Java and Python. He said if I wanted to move into finance knowing C++ would help me much more.

This is false -- C++, Java, and Python -- are used in the finance industry. Does your friend actually know all three languages equally, or is he simply being biased because he "knows" c++

He said that C++ is harder but avoids me having to learn anything else as it does pretty much everything.

It's all about building a tool box. You wouldn't use a chainsaw to cut your grass right?

He also said Python and Java are slow.

Naïve written C++ is also slow. Speed should only be considered when necessary.

What do you mean by this ?

I'm currently working with Java on a daily basis, the last team I worked in we wrote in C. As a software developer you never stop learning. There is no one language that you learn and consider yourself 'done' in the field. It's an ongoing evolving process. Languages come and go, they adapt and syntax changes. It is your responsibility to ensure you keep self trained to a level which your employer or client deems suitable to do the work that is required of you.

If your project spec refers to Java... learn Java first as that is the language required. When you understand OO principles learn others in your spare time or when required.
