How do I start a Software Company

Posted 08 March 2017 - 02:08 PM

So... I'm kind of worried at this point. I've made a game, but I don't know how to market it?
How can I start a simple software or game company. Its Me, and two of my friends. I want a company with a registered name and logo, and my software programes to be copyrighted.

I've looked everywhere!
I can't find a beginning to Marketing, Selling Softwares, Games, etc.
If any of you (awesome people) can just give me an in-depth read about marketing Software and games or just point me to a website which explains everything.

Thanks for everything!

Are you sure about that? "marketing independent game studio" pulled up a ton of things.

Get a distributor & let them worry about it.

Years ago (2003-ish?) I wrote a program that I paid to be pressed to cd, shrink wrapped with instructions & everything. It didn't even break even. No one would take my calls, I was no one. My advice, is if you want it to land on shelves, get a distributor.

If you want your game to play on consoles, that's an entirely different story. You must get a software developer license per the console owner, which is an entirely lengthily & likely you are not qualified process. To bypass this, as pre my previous statement, you get a distributor that is authorized to publish for said console, & they will release your product.

Or you can just sell downloadable content online.

This is the easy part. Consult a lawyer, get an LLC, get licensed in your state (assuming you need to).

Want some more good advice? Don't get into business with friends. Get an LLP, & agree upfront how it's dissolved, because that's how it's going to end. Get a lawyer, get everything in writing, & do it up front. If you, or anyone in your group, is unwilling to do this, then don't get into business with them. Disagreements WILL happen, & you need a way that is predetermined to leverage them. Anyone unwilling to discuss it upfront gives you no reason to believe they will manage it properly when the time comes.

** moved to freelancing ** where this has been asked many times before. Just another example of his "everywhere".
