The programming language you learn today won't be the language you'll be using in 2, 5, 10, 20, 30 years time.

What you should be learning is how to program, not what to program in.

Being a useful developer means knowing your way around the SDLC. Programming is so much more than simply being able to recite language keywords, and knowing where the curly braces are supposed to go.

If you don't master the finer arts of 'how', you'll be nothing more than a cube farm denizen, subject to the whims of market forces and management head count exercises.

Eclipse works pretty well for a Java IDE, but so it goes.

Rock on with that php development work.

Using an IDE shouldn't be your first concern when learning programming. You should focus on the language itself and all you really need is a simple text editor and the compiler and runtime environment.

What's being taught in most Universities in the UK is java and its many derivatives,

Python should also be on your list and SQL and html5, Ruby, some javascript and C# and its derivatives like Xamarin.

If you have no experience then junior developer jobs would be the most logical course to follow.

there are plenty to choose from on the jobs boards.

but as Salem_c has said become a developer not just a one language programmer.

As a junior developer your tasks will be easier than a Senior developer but through time and hard work it can be done.
