Simple, but Eye-Catching Program for a College Appeal Letter?

Posted 10 May 2017 - 02:36 PM

I've recently been rejected from a university I really wish to go to for not reaching their grade requirements for a Computer Science specialising in Software Engineering degree. And quite frankly, I realised I don't quite have anything under my sleeves then other a couple of recommendation letters from my past lecturers and perhaps a somewhat decent appeal letter.

I wish to turn the odds in my favour by either trying to write a simple but eye-catching program or making an interactive appeal letter (perhaps in animation form?). I have a deadline till the end of this month and I'm a complete beginner at this. Am I shooting for the stars? I would love to hear your input on this.

Thanks a lot in advance.

An interactive appeals letter won't really make a difference.

Are you enrolled in the university, but just got rejected from a major? Or did you apply for admissions to the university, and they rejected you outright? Or did they admit you, just not for this particular program?

Sorry for the confusion, just realised I said "college" in my title yet proceeded to use the term "university" in my description. Where I come from, we actually call the institution where you're about to get your undergraduate degree, "university".

Anyways, I've been counter-offered to do another course. But I'm pretty much set on getting this degree from this particular university. But I realised I have a subpar application, and just wanted to up my game by making something from scratch to perhaps make them reconsider into enrolling me.

But there really is no way, right? :(

I don't know how things work in your part of the world, but around here it's often possible to change majors after admission. So it might be a worthwhile gamble to take the program they're offering you and try to change horses after you've got in.
However, that could be terrible advice, in that you might end up stuck in a major you don't want, which would be a substantially regrettable outcome, so you should consider the thought carefully in the context of your superior local knowledge.

I don't think that any university worth studying in would be particularly impressed by a flashy cover letter - particularly if it was in support of admission to a CS program, which is not about graphic design. Maybe if you were looking to do marketing, I could see that.

One thing to be concerned about - what if they're right? I mean, if they think you're not the ideal candidate for the position, maybe they've got a better idea of who's likely to succeed in their program than you do, right? I don't mean to discourage you from pursuing your dream, but you might want to at least consider this possibility, and how you would address this.

Again - I think macosx's questions are still relevant. Was it the institution as a whole that rejected you, or the specific department/college inside the university system?

As Jon said, it is often times possible to transfer into a program after being admitted to the university. If you are not competitive for the specific major, the way to fix that is by taking the requisite courses and doing well in them. A flashy animation isn't the way to do this.

If the institution outright rejected you, then either (i) take them up on their offer and do the one extra course; or (ii) go to a community college (or equivalent in your country) to make progress towards some general eds and intro courses, then try transferring next year or the following.

Not sure, but I suspect that "course" in the OP's local terminology might be more equivalent to "degree" than to "class". Interested - can you clarify this usage?
