How to view my SQLite Database on Physical Device

Posted 23 May 2017 - 10:41 AM

I'm trying to view the contents of the database created in the application on the physical device. I know with an emulator the user has to use Android Device Monitor but I'm unsure what I'm suppose to do with a physical device because ADM does not work on physical devices. I have a Nexus 5 phone that is unrooted. I would prefer a solution that does not involve rooting, but will accept if necessary.

So.. a database browser, outside of the app, for the content as the DB sits on a mobile device?

Is this app to run on the phone or on a PC?

I'm trying to see the database contents for my own development needs. Its not a function of the application.

Mkay. What's the setup? The DB is on a mobile device.. and this device is connected to a PC?

Yes, I have a Nexus 5 that is connected to a PC (laptop). I'm creating a database at run time in onCreate(), which is creating the database on the device.

Okay.. well assuming you built our app and there isn't crazy encryption or what not you should be able to use of of the many "sqlite browser" options found in an internet search, navigate through the explorer to the db location, and open it. 'sqlitebrowser' seems fairly popular.

Where is the database location located? And how do I access it? From my understanding, the databases in android are private and cannot be easily accessed unless you root your phone device. My intention is to extract the databases and view their contents. How do I extract and view the database?

Ah... so wait, there are more? Are you just going to scour the phone for any and all DBs from any app/game on there?

If that is the case then that significantly changes things.

No, I do not want access to other app databases. I want access to the databases that I created using my application.
The problem is I do not know where the database that I create is located. I want to view MY databases and only my databases that I create. I want a step by step procedure for finding and viewing the contents located in my databases.

My application will create databases during runtime. There will not be a single database for the entire application.

Plug the phone to the PC via USB.. turn on the 'debug' option.. and you should be able to navigate the phone's contents with Window's File Explorer.

I'm not getting anything. When I click internal storage for Nexus 5, my application is no where in sight. Yes, I do have USB debugging enabled. My application is installed on the phone, however there is nothing there.

There is an android folder, but again, no databases are located there by my application.

You have to dig around in it. Maybe use the DDMS tool. If that fails to come up with anything then you are probably SOL... you know.. being that's most likely your phone's security running interference.

DDMS tool does not come up with anything, when dealing with a physical device: only with an android emulator. I've tried multiple times, nothing appears in the data folder.

Then you are up the creek. Mobile devices are pretty adamant about their views on outside tampering.

SQLite Debugger can solve your problem.
You also can use Root Browser to view your created file.
