Star Trek quotes

Posted 25 May 2017 - 08:26 AM

Do you ever quote Star Trek in normal conversation?

Sometimes I like to quote Picard - "Make it so!"

:)

When hammering out a project spec and someone comes up with an interesting but drawn out and overly complex solution I quote my favorite STNG episode "The Nth Degree" and say "An interesting suggestion, Lieutenant. However, that approach would require much more time than our original plan. At least seven weeks." Then perhaps if they change the scope I could follow up with "I could have it for you in 2 days".

Let's just say I don't get to use these lines often. ;)

"Damn it, Jim! I'm developer, not a graphic artist."

Whenever are servers are under severe load, I try to do a Scottie impression "She canna take anymore!"

I mumble to myself when I'm runnig 'git stash': "Everybody, remember where we parked."

When we are digging through our JIRA issues or backlog, and we can't find an item: "Ve are looking for noo-klee--aar vessels."

I think too myself whenever the VeraCode scan report comes back with a huge number of issues the quote from "The Trouble with Tribbles":

Quote

Captain Kirk, I consider your security measures a disgrace. In my opinion, you have taken this entire, very important project far too lightly.

Oh yeah... when I read a particularly incomprehensible bug report or code comment: "You've not experienced Shakespeare until you've read it in the original Klingon."

My boss likes to say "Set phasers on stun." to remind me to at least try to be polite.

I think "resistance is futile" whenever something seems inevitable. And my husband likes to say, "I'm giving 'er all she's got, Captain." Ha. Scotty was awesome.

I will, on occasion, when the computer is taking too long to get back to me, do my best Scotty impression: "Computer? Computer? Hello computer?"

I watched Star Trek IV when Nimoy died. Not sure how well it held up, but for quotes and fan service, it's gold. It should also be noted that someone did eventually invent Transparent Aluminum: http://makezine.com/...arent-aluminum/

I find my inner geek will more frequently hear one of two Han Solo quotes: "She'll hold together. ( Hear me baby, hold together. )" and "Never tell me the odds!"

Not infrequently, I'll mutter "the beast at Tanagra" if I'm struggling with something, or "Shaka, when the walls fell" occasionally if I fuck something up.

But mostly it's just to amuse myself and if someone asks me what I said I just shrug and don't explain. I do THAT a LOT.

I prefer Spock's famous quote: "To be or not to be, there is no try."
