the Original Adventure game goes open source!

Posted 09 June 2017 - 10:32 AM

The original open source adventure game from 1976 has gone open source! With the authors permission, the 1995 port of adventure has bee posted to Git Lab for your cloning desires! I've already compiled this on Linux CentOS without issue & will start to poke at it with sharp, pointed sticks.

Hmm... there's a database.h called in actions.c that I'm not seeing.

A thought this had already been release to the world ages ago. Must be thinking of something else...

Nope. Found it: http://jerz.setonhil...re-source-code/

Also, you can play it online: http://rickadams.org/adventure/

Looking at the Makefile, database.c and .h are generated by the dungeon utility (which is compiled from dungeon.c).

If you want some serious ick, check out Knuth's implementation in his Selected Papers on Fun and Games.

For those who are not familiar with building C projects, the following should get you up and running, at least on a POSIX-compliant machine.

$ git submodule update --recursive --remote --init
$ make
$ ./advent

Do you prefer 80's ick, or 90's ick? I find that half the fun of thumbing through vintage source code is leveraging experience earned!

But then again, I'm easily amused ;)
