Idea: Migrate to new software?

Posted 15 July 2017 - 06:12 PM

I had this crazy idea; and it's probably impossible or just unreasonable given the monumental database this site may have... but what if...

what ifffff...

we migrated the site to Discourse?

And fixed all the blue boxes with question marks where images should be! :D

Interesting idea. The last I understood Skyhawk was looking at going to Xenforo, but ran into some difficulties.

Just looked it up. Looks pretty enterprise-y.

To be honest, there's a couple things about us that would fit great in a Discourse format
  • We're pretty active with rep and stuff (Discourse has a fun way of handling it)
  • Our mobile interface SUCKS, and Discourse is mobile-ready
  • Discourse feels more modern-y and slick, especially for reading the amount of content we have to offer
  • A lot of relevant notifications that are far better than our pure-email stuffs
  • Active development on this fairly-recent project means lots of fun support stuff and probably fewer bugs from deprecated things I don't know about
  • It's just overall awesomer, and open-source

I mean, I don't know really anything about RoR, but I've seen Discourse in use all over the place and it's a fantastic piece of software for any sort of flat discussion board.

OH YES, AND THE BUILT IN Q&A FUNCTIONALITY

Cool.

Oh, silly modi. Always acting the cool guy. Just over there in the corner with a German stout, a serious look on your face behind the perfect brown grizzled beard. Your eyes sparkle ever so faintly with the power and wisdom of time and trudging through the cute ignorance of new programmers. Even behind your majestic, manly facade, and I can sense the fan-girling for the idea of a better piece of forum software.

Salute.

I just looked at the demo site for it.

I have to admit that I like the idea of modern features and capabilities, such as the Markdown support that let's you simply paste an image into a post - I enjoy that on Discord and the Xamarin Forums.

I would think that a from management perspective it would be nice to offload a lot of heavy lifting - especially when there are only 1-2 people administrating/supporting the site.

It costs money, therefore the site has to make money. So does it support/allow monitization (advertising).
Only Skyhawk can look at the cost per page view - cost per storage GB - etc. and know if it is even financially feasible.

Does anyone know if it supports all our existing metaphores: Individual blogs... Hierarchical sub-sections... restricted rooms such as the "Mentor and above" areas...

I noticed it said "Wordpress plugins" - Anyone know what that's about? Might be a nice way to include other content. For example I have a Wordpress site for my Xamarin tutorials. If that can link in as my personal blog and look like DIC content {...}

I imagine support for advertisements would be easy to integrate into Discourse; what I do know is that I would be absolutely happy to continue paying my subscription here for an upgraded forum. And Discourse in particular? I'd pay twice the current subscription. I wish I could keep paying my yearly, and I'd be happy with paying 30$ quarterly for a DIC++ subscription.

Skyhawk, Discourse pls :)

That'd cause you're old school bro! Discourse is, subjectively of course, more responsive and flexible. I just feel like we have more to gain from its design that Xenforo. But hey, it's ultimately up to Hawk. :P

I remember when thedailywtf migrated to discourse. The interface was so bad I left, and haven't been back since.

Okely dokely, bro. Xenforo operates more similar to the current setup, looks to be more stable, and has a larger feature set to add in.. So it goes.

I suppose as far as stability goes Xenforo is older and has been battle tested harder, but I don't feel like Discourse loses to it in any aspect. The feature set and extensibility of Discourse looks really good.

Kiparsky, seeing as your opinions usually surmount to "x had at least one subjective issue I didn't like and I will therefor never give it a second thought", I don't really give any of our thoughts any value. Such a seemingly closed mind leaves no gain to be had in discussing anything with you. It's nothing personal, I just subjectively dislike your personality type.

So, if someone has tried the product and hated it, their experience is of no value to you? Gotcha. Best of luck with that!
