Best language for Web applications?

Posted 05 August 2017 - 12:31 PM

Peace be with you!

I have only been developing Windows desktop applications on VB.NET (thanks to great help from people here at DIC from time to time). Now I'm so eager to write one of these applications that runs on the web. There are these "online systems" that people register, and the "system" takes them through the many developed features. I would really like to start with a student information system that runs online (on a web server)where people can interact with it, it has to be secure also. You get me, these so many online systems we have nowadays.

I know php has been used to do this for a long time now, do you people suggest that php is the best in this and I should learn it more? Are there any specific areas I should focus more seriously in that language? Anywhere I can start with (tutorials/any other online content?)

Thank you!

The price point for hosting on Windows tends to be higher than hosting on Linux. So for some people, although they would prefer to use some .NET based language, they end up passing on that preference and moving on to their second choice.

NET Core and Mono equalizes that a little bit by letting you go with C# but still host on Linux. Also some of the cloud hosting solutions like Azure and AWS let you minimize costs by only charging you when your server is running.

Hosting PHP on linux is probably the cheapest option out there. If you're just looking to get stuff out in public, that's a way to do it.
I'm not a big fan of PHP as a language - I see it as a rotting corpse of a failed dream - but it's certainly the easiest thing to deploy for little money.

I work in django on the day job, it's great. What I've seen of rails looks fine, flask and sinatra are interesting. If there's a Scala-based framework I'd certainly give that a try. Really I'm not all that fussy.

PHP is easy to learn and perfect for the website and small web application development. There are different frameworks available in the PHP and to develop a web application, Laravel or the cake.PHP will be a good choice. According to me, you should also try to learn Javascript along with PHP. You can use it with PHP.
The libraries like AJAX and Jquery will make your web application work faster as it does not need a web server for loading. After that, you can learn Angular.js or react.js for the front end development.

There are different programming language to build web applications. But which language is best is difficult to answer as it depends on many variables as every programming language is unique and its own set of rules, frameworks, pros & cons, platforms and communities. There are 2 types of programming language- Compiled & Interpreted, which are dynamic, do not need to be compiled before they are run.

  • Interpreted - PHP, Javascript, Python, Ruby
  • Compiled - Java & C#

If you’re a complete novice, PHP will give you the most results in the shortest amount of time.

Thank you very much!

Know a great online resource I can use to study online, or a guide of things I should read in a series? I just know the basic (CRUD) and I want to go deeper.
