Posted 23 August 2017 - 09:58 AM

Does anyone know how valuable (if at all) the c++ associates programmers certification is?

Worth it in with respects to what?

Depends on the cert, where it's from, the view of the cert, etc. As my usual advice still stands - typically certs do not hurt your career, but can help.

Moved to 'cubicle corner'.

If I recall correctly, it's from the C++ Institute.

Based on the quality of their question in this post, I would put more value on a toilet paper roll. Granted, that one question may have been an outlier.

After digging more into C++ Institute, it looks like it is just a driver to get you to pay for Pearson Testing Services to give you a test and provide you a certification if you pass. Growing up, I'd always had a low view of Pearson -- probably because I was always on the test taking side of things. Now I despise Pearson even more.

Certifications are great, for companies that care about certifications. Before you interview at places, it's impossible to really know who that audience is.

The general rule of thumb is that certifications help prior to having a degree, as they are a way of showing the ability to read, understand, & replicate a specific subject matter. However, beyond having a few years experience in the field, &/or a degree, they generally are just fodder for your portfolio.

For programming jobs, I'd rank the things that matter most in this order:

  • Problem Solving Skills
  • Experience
  • Ability to work in a team
  • Ability to make quick coffee runs
  • Formal Education
  • Sense of humour
  • Personal hygiene
  • Random certificates

So, yea. It won't hurt your chances, but it may not stop you from losing the job to a well dressed, quick witted barista.

Hey sorry I've been busy, I couldn't get back. It is the C++ institute. Thank you for your response, that was (mostly) the responses I was thinking I was going to get.

I studied and got a bachelors in BA, but in my final semester I had to take a computer science class and I loved it.

I was thinking about going back to school, but its so expensive and there are so many great resources to teach yourself so I decided to stick with that.

I just want to get my foot in the door somewhere and I think I need something to prove I am at least basic and I believe this will help.

Perhaps I should have specified this information earlier, but as I am sure you know I am a novice and only looking to get more accustomed to this world.
