Is that a dunk-you-in-a-river sort of a thing? Do you have to get any body parts curtailed? Are you still allowed to eat Cheez Doodles?

Inquiring minds want to know.

I'm unclear as yet.

Nah we're being audited by Microsoft for the second time since I started working here. For those keeping track at home, that's twice in less than the span of a year.

The last audit turned up I think 2 duplicate installs of Office, and nothing else. But it cost us tens of thousands to get the auditing software in place.

I can only surmise that Microsoft doesn't want our business. That's fine, I can write software in Linux. I can convert all this .NET shit I have and migrate our codebase away from their proprietary Framework. I'm cool with that, and that must be what they want.

I would be curious to why you are all triggering an audit. Old employees, bad record keeping, keys showing up in the wild, etc.

I was just going with it being Microsoft and they're predatory.

It sincerely doubt it. Of the small.. small.. small subset of companies that work with Microsoft ;) I would like to think there is a specific trigger and not that rolling the pair of six sided dice came up with your company's name in a short period of time.

That's why I said "because they're predatory." We've kept a tight grip on our licenses and carefully counted and documented everything since we finished the last audit, to prepare for just this instance. We know there's nothing dumb going on, but Microsoft is going to suck hour of my time, my boss's time, and our sys admin's time - just to be dicks. Part of me wants to present them with a consultation fee, cause that's a lot of money we're spending in man hours alone just to appease them. And that's really what bothers me - instead of spending time working on my project, I'm checking over all the systems on our network to physically verify that our LAN monitoring tool is correctly reporting all the keys.

Spoiler alert: it is.

So that means I'm going to be in here on Saturday, working when I need to be getting ready for a show, to make up for the time I had to spend today doing all that shit.

It makes me want to take back every kind thing I've said about Microsoft.

Again.. I doubt they are being predatory and specifically pointing to your company and saying "fuck them in particular this weekend!". In the midst of dealing with it I would highly suggest bringing up why your stuff was flagged twice in a short period of time. Have them go proffer a reason.

Yea. I've suggested it to my boss that he ask why. I'm not the one dealing with them directly.

My theory is that since we had 2 relatively inconsequential items and just got audited they think we'll think we're in the clear or something and have gone on a piracy spree.

I wouldn't be surprised if that was actually the case though. There's a pretty big group of people who love whatever authority they've been given and rub their nipples whenever they can stomp on anyone for any reason. I bet Microsoft employs some of them. I know the TSA and immigration services definitely employ some of them.

we're scoping a new integration project with a vendor and I seriously hope this just a dummy endpoint because they've given us a method called "processrequest" and it's a single xml string input
