Never understand the "is it worth it" questions. It's not worth it to me, because I don't game.

Yes.. I picked up a 29" wide screen.. totes worth it. Stand is a bit shit, but so it goes. Better than the old 23" TN panel from eight years ago.

Right now I think 27" is the sweet spot for those who game and program. I have two sitting on my desk at work and plan to get 2 more for my home. But what I find more important than size right now is bezel width. The sleeker you can get on bezel the better it is for stacking next to one another and seeming "seamless". Which you might not think really matters, but it certainly cuts down on visual noise when developing.

What is the price range and refresh rate you are looking at for your 1440p monitor?

Depending on those, you may want to look at something else.

Though it is also all about your personal preferences. I wound up getting a 28inch 4K monitor with 60Hz refresh for gaming and everything else and absolutely love it. It may not have the highest color fidelity in the world (particularly around the edges where things get lighter), but it works for what I need and is significantly better than my old monitor.

Typically I check the CPU support list.

Example:

I don't understand what that link is supposed to be indicating.

Again - I typically defer to the straight dope out of the horse's mouth and check the CPU support list.

If you feel strongly otherwise go pick up parts and report back how it went.

My understanding is that nVidia's variable refresh solution depends on special hardware present in the monitor ... hardware that is not in Freesync/Activesync monitors.

So yes, the monitor will work, but you won't get the full variable refresh capabilities of your nVidia video card.

Power has nothing to do with it. nVidia chose to go with Gsync for its variable refresh technology, while AMD (and followers of DisplayPort) went with FreeSync. To take full advantage of the variable refresh to get rid of tearing and/or stuttering you'll need a monitor that uses the same technology as your video card. If you don't mind the occasional tearing or stuttering, then you can use a monitor from the other camp.
