Learning and Targeting MSIL/CIL/IL

Posted 09 November 2017 - 12:38 PM

I would like to write a compiler. I probably will be able to find the information I need on compilers in general, and I have a book about it. (I already know about lexers and parsers, and tokens and syntax trees). But my target language is MSIL/CIL/IL and I don't know where to find information on it. I need information that is free and arranged in a way that maximizes learning. I tried reading the CLR Spec but the volume and arrangement of the information is intimidating. I want to know where I can find free ebooks or tutorials that teach the language.

Should I simply read the CLR Spec? How would I best make use of it since no one can absorb all the information just by reading through it?

I would have assumed you had started here: Getting Started Understanding MSIL Assembly Language
