I try for the majority, but most days are different. Some times it is in meetings, other planning, other catching up on new tech, others updating the midget wrestling circuit blog, conversing with other departments, helping team members out, breaks, lunch, sometimes second lunches, and doing other cursory corporate needs.

I would have a hard time coming up with an answer to that, it feels like a coast-of-England question to me. How long is the coastline of England? Well, it depends on the scale at which you measure it, and the numbers change radically as you change scales, so ultimately you can spend a lot of time dithering about it and not get anything useful unless you know what matters about the question.

What's the question you're actually trying to answer? What's the motivation for the question?

Breast, goddammit. The quote is "Music has charms to sooth a savage breast". It's in a poem. Congreve, I think.

Try playing your fiddle at a riled grizzly bear some time, see what it buys you.

(What's that called? It is not a malapropism because that refers to similar sounding words.

There is also a term, I believe, that refers to a misquote becoming better known than the original.)

At my company, we pair the majority of the time, so it's not possible to listen to music. If I'm working on my own, I don't have music on, because yeah, I wouldn't really be able to focus on the work.

Time not spent programming is usually on meetings, lunch, just having a short walk (I tend to get up every hour or so to walk around) or talking to people.

What do you consider programming? Is working on a design document or drawing UML diagrams on a whiteboard part of programming? Is researching good algorithms for the problem at hand part of programming? Is writing small proof of concepts or prototypes that will be thrown away and not used for the final project considered programming? Is determining the machine/environment constraints considered programming? Is requirements gathering considered programming? Is debugging newly written code programming? How about debugging existing production code?

Stop trying to make generalizations fit. Listen to whatever the hell you want.

There's no secret sauce, there's no shortcuts. What works for one, can't just be replicated to work for you.

What he said. The point is to find and maintain focus. If music helps, listen to that music. If music distracts you, don't listen to music.
