Cyber-Crime How has it affected you ?

Posted 20 January 2018 - 04:56 AM

Just been informed by a certain uk printer that I use to put my art-photography on to canvas that they have been the unfortunate victim of a cyber-attack and that my email and password was stolen.

Of course I immediately informed them to delete my account, which had been locked by them as a security measure.

So anyone else been affected by Cyber Criminals ?

I've been affected by the successful attacks on Home Depot, LinkedIn, Experian, and Anthem. All of them have various bits of fallout of needing to close out credit cards, change passwords and/or completely abandon some email accounts. Just this week my debit card was fraudulently used in a city I've never been in nor done any business with.

The attack on Anthem impacts my work life daily, because now I have to deal with incomprehensible 16 character passwords that are only good for 8 hours; security programs running on my desktop and servers that I manage that have visibly shown 15-40% CPU performance drains and 30-40% I/O performance drains; and nannyware and the desktop and servers that prevents running anything useful to perform any type of diagnostics or troubleshooting -- to get a 6 hours window to use the tools requires going through a 10 day-to-6 week exception process unless we can show an outage is happening or imminent -- in most machines I can't even start up the task manager's detailed view. So in other words, work that would normally occupy about 15-20 hours per week now takes 20-60 hours.

Been taken for money once a few years back.. had to go into the bank and cycle through my charges to verify what was me and not. Ooohwee.. that was mildly embarrassing, but so it goes.

Had to change plenty of account passwords and what not over the years.. and occasionally get pulled in for this BS at work when the sys ops need some code.

No.. not really. I worked in a credit card fault unit with a processor in town for some years so I was familiar with the routine.

Sure, it was annoying my card was shut off (they had an old phone number on file they were "trying to contact"), but I had alternative payment methods and still could operate ATM transactions. Thankfully nothing big was coming out of any account at the time so a minor hiccup.
