Voting Software/Application

Posted 20 January 2018 - 11:46 PM

Hi, it's been around half a year since I last logged in here.

I apologize if I am posting this question in this forum as I am really unsure where to post this.

I'm currently in the final stage of my studies - my thesis. I am thinking about proposing a voting software/application for our university since we still don't have one. I'd just like to ask for the site's members for your opinion on:

1. Should I make it web-based or desktop application?
2. I honestly don't have experience yet but if I am to make it web-based, what is the easiest language to learn that I can use and will be efficient for this type of project? Also, what should I use as its back end (that is free to use)?

I highly appreciate your input on this. Thank you so much! :)

You've posted in the VB.NET forum, so which language(s) are you comfortable with?

What do you think will determine whether to build a desktop or web-based application? Who will be the users of your application?

I don't have experience in web-based programming. I only used to create them using Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004. I guess ASP.Net is kind of the easiest for me. If it's desktop then I'm most comfortable with VB.Net.

For me it really depends on what the users prefer, ease of access/use, and its ability to actually deliver.
The users will be the students. This is mainly for student government elections. Of course the teachers will also use them to generate the results of the elections as well as the uploading of the students' information.

Will any users need to access the application remotely across the internet?
Will all users have access to the application via the college network?
Etc.. cf due diligence. These are the kinds of questions that you need to expand upon with your initial/discovery phase.

With no experience of web-based applications you would need to factor in the substantial time this will take, to become proficient.

A bit of brainstorming

A web-based solution gives the users more options to access like smart phone, tablet...
where a desktop app would limit them to a PC or laptop.

With your skills a desktop app seems easier.

A web based app needs a host. Would the university provide it?
If yes what does the server - support ASP.NET, PHP, MySQL...?
If no you need to find a free host or pay for it.

It's up to you to decide what's best. :smile2:/>

I honestly doubt that the university will ever pay for something like that most especially it can and will only be used occasionally.

Is it fine for polling/voting systems to be created as desktop apps? Won't it be weird or something? Is there actually a desktop app for this?

If a desktop app will everyone who needs access be able to access it?

Either way, you still need to be able to submit info somewhere and collate it centrally.

It also depends if you intend to replicate a real application, or it is the design and structure that is of most importance to your thesis.

I don't really intend to replicate an existing application, I just want to know if a desktop application for polling/voting isn't weird/awkward or something

If you can overcome the hosting costs you could consider using something like Webmatrix, I know it's no longer supported by MS but is a great introduction to Webpage development and allows you to use your VB skills for the code. It handles all the publishing process and has support for an SQL database. Its really simple to manually create a website from scratch. Just a thought.
