Thank you very much. That has helped me understand strings more. I realize this post is old, but I have a few questions:

Does this mean that strings are an object of the type class/data structure in the header "#include <string>", where the letters are stored in an array of characters, and *string name*.size() is a member function of the object or class/data structure?

Thanks for this, but here is where Im getting confused...
you say..

Here is the instruction which creates the C++ string.
string hello = "Hello, World";
The left-hand-side of the = symbol is the same string literal from the first program, "Hello, World". On the right-hand-side, is a C++ string object which has a variable name of hello.

I thought "string hello" is on the left of the =
and "Hello, World"; is on the right

that's the way its printed and read by me, left to right

can any one clear this up for me???
