Grub Loading Error

Posted 07 February 2008 - 04:48 PM

Hey!

I recently installed Ubuntu with windows XP, It was working fine untill about the 3rd or 4th time I booted my machine. It shows this error

Quote

GRUB Loading stage1.5

GRUB Loading, please wait...
Error 17

After that, it does nothing.

Thanks,
AJ32 :)

Can you paste your grub.conf file?

a quick google shows that error 17 = inability to mount partition.

That would be kinda hard, considering that the computer with the problem has no kind of connection to the internet! :)

I also found the inability to mount partition,How can I test this

Thanks! :)

(maybe I should have just stayed with Windows...)

You can mount the linux partition, and save a copy to a flash drive, and then copy&paste to your internet enabled computer.

Typically, this happens when you add/remove hard drives or the partitions on your hard drive(s) have changed. You need to boot into a LiveCD and update GRUB to work with the new partition table.

1. How do I update GRUB?

2. Good idea (I should have thought of that...)
I'll post it ASAP!

Thanks!

...It's Windows XP, Not Vista. I have to confess, I would rather use XP than Linux as of right now... ;)

Maybe, but once you get it working you will probably change that attitude.

Actually, 2 year ago, I used Linux and finally got sick of it, so I did GO BACK. Now, I am TRYING to find a better distribution of Linux. (At least Windows doesn't give me any boot errors like this hardly at all, and the one time it did, it helped me recover from it, not just "ERROR 17"...

(I always wondered why they called it "GRUB"...)

/boot/grub/menu.lst

There's two file names that grub will recognize, and it's either menu.lst or grub.conf

To update GRUB!

you will need to boot into a LiveCD, then chroot into your existing install.

From there.

 computer ~ # grub
grub > root( INSERT YOUR /boot PARTITION HERE IN GRUB NOTATION )
grub > setup (hd0)
grub > quit
 computer ~ # reboot

What in the world do mean by that??? Microsoft wouldn't make anything for a bootloader that is a piece of crap.

Some things I don't understand, Microsoft comes up with a piece of garbage installation program for a good OS, Then the linux guys come up with a good OS, That has a bad bootloader and messes up your system.
