A few years ago I left my first web hangout because it was rapidly turning into another /b/ and I could tell that it was having a bad influence on my offline life. I had been hanging out on the NaNoWriMo forum after leaving when I got the opportunity to change my nick there, so I decided it was time for a new start with a new nick.

I was on a meta-humor kick so I wanted to grab the nick 4thWall [1], but since NaNoWriMo is full of writers and literary buffs I figured it would have already been taken. I settled on 5thWall instead because I figured that wouldn't be taken, and since the 5th wall is either the ceiling or the floor I could say that I chose it because it's where deus ex machina (the plot device [2], not the game ) came from. Though seeing as deus ex machina was my reason, it's probably better that I'm a programmer rather than a writer.
