Interview Questions

Posted 19 February 2008 - 12:32 PM

So later today I'm interviewing someone for a position at my day job. Interviewing is not something I have a lot of experience with, especially in the IT world. But, we all have to start sometime, so here I am. But, I wonder what some of the weirdest or funniest interview questions you've been asked are?

I've never really been asked any weird questions, but I did have a situation where I asked a company how much they were looking at paying and the guy said "Around twenty five" and I said "an hour?" and the guy said "no... a year" and I laughed at him in the interview. Needless to say, didn't get the job... didn't want it either after that.

So, what are some good general interview questions, and some funny ones you've been asked?

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

I remember sitting in on a interview with a gentleman applying for a programmer job. My boss asked how many languages he knew. "English and Chinese," he replied. I think it lost something in the translation.

My favorite ones that I hate to answer.

Why should I hire you?
What can you do for us?
What are your weaknesses?

Oh, also, I was interviewing a guy when I worked at RadioShack and asked him why he left his last job, he said he had a "disagreement with his boss" and I asked what kind of disagreement and he said "I punched her in the face".

Neat.

LOL.

I have only had one job and the only question in the interview was, "can you work sundays?" So I don't have any neat stories.

Well for the most part:

So, tell me about yourself?
Do you work well under pressure?
What are your strengths?
What are your weaknesses?
Do you have any questions you'd like to ask?
How much experience do you have in programming?
Do you enjoy programming?

That should reveal a lot about the personality you are interviewing. I learn't a lot about this in SOSE. :P

the most important question imo is what questions they have.

The interview for my current job was pretty crazy, it quickly turned into a quiz that started to test my networking knowledge.

They started with simple stuff, worked their way up to more advanced questions, being asked the steps in restoring a Cisco IOS Config at a job interview caught me off guard.

I was called a couple hours later with a job offer.

Last year when I was interviewing everything was in the bag I was talking to the president of the company and it hit.

I asked about health insurance. She was like umm we only offer coverage for the employee. I asked if there was coverage available for purchase for Dependants. She said no.

I thanked her for the interview and apologized for wasting their time.

The goofiest question I ever was asked was what kind of dog I was. I replied a Samoyed. Hard working Independent member of the family that likes to sleep. I got that job.

The dumbest question I was asked was why should we hire you. I replied so that I don't rent the open store front across the street and drive you out of business. (the dude also ran payday loan stores and I didnt find out about that untill the interview. Cant trust a loan shark. And now he is out of business)

The worst in my experience are the "behavioral interview" questions. You know, the "Tell me about a time this or that happened, how you handled it, and the outcome."
Its all about the STAR
S - Situation
T - Task
A - Action
R - Result

For some reason that always throw me for a loop.

My last three jobs have been... well lacking in the interview process. Never once did I have to prove that anything on my resume was true, or even remotely correct.

As a matter of fact, one of the interviewers (for my current job) was getting shit faced during the interview... looking back, having an interview at a bar is a weird setting. I blacked out shortly after I got into his unmarked van.

I hate those. Well, I bitched out a stupid customer. They deserved it.

My favorite question is: "What is a weakness you have?"

My answer: I have no tolerance for incompetence.

They haven't called me back B)
