Hoax E-mails

Posted 20 February 2008 - 12:44 PM

I just received an e-mail from my girlfriend that was forwarded to her by her grandmother(<----she also sent it to my gf's mother and everyone on her contact list)

This forwarded e-mail was a hoax e-mail something to do with Osama BinLadden and that their computers where going to be erased if they saw a torch burning or something on their screen.

Try to make a long story short, the tree girls were in such a panic they tried calling Mcafee and other places to try and see what they should do about this, and to let the company know that there was a horrible virus out there wiping out computers.

This is the killer for me, they thought this e-mail was going to wipe out their computer since they opened it, they thought it would be a good idea to .............

wait for it.......

FORWARD IT TO ME AT WORK!!!! So i could look at it.

Now, common sense would tell you that's not the smartest thing to do IF this e-mail would really do that. Not to mention if it was really a virus and i get it at work and by some chance it gives our system a virus and we get hacked, that equals lose of job for me.

I looked up the hoax e-mail on Mcaffee's web-site and sure enough there it was under the HOAX section.

Here is the link if you would like to see it.

http://us.mcafee.com...&virus_k=140696

Totally ridiculous and i was speechless at what they did, especially sending it to me at work.

Sorry but i felt the need to share this story.

I received this email a while back. It took forever to recover from it.

Never had anything like that with emails. Did get my comp mostly wiped by something a while back. Can't believe they sent it on to you, especialy being so worried about it themselves. Crazy.

Personal favorite I ever got, so amazing I kept it:

Quote

From: CENTRAL BANK OF NIGERIA
Subject: GOVERNOR,CENTRAL BANK OF NIGERIA (CBN)
Attention: beneficiary

The Central Bank of Nigeria has discovered that they currently owe you $2,000,000,000.

Please send the following information:
1. Full name
2. Phone and fax number
3. Address were you want them to send the ATM card to (p.o box not acceptable)
4. Your age and current occupation
5. Attach copy of your identification

PROFESSOR CHARLES C. SOLUDO
GOVERNOR, CENTRAL BANK OF NIGERIA (CBN)

I mean, it's pretty straight forward. Doesn't butter you up with a sob story or any other kind of window dressing. You have to admire the, um, I don't know what, actually. Wishful thinking?

Actually the better one is the deposed good ruler of nigeria who needs your help to sneak his fortunes out of his country before he is assassianted(sic). So he *cough* needs your bank account information.

fyi: people are stupid--case closed
