Preferably open source or free without ads.
Thanks,

By file comparison, you mean a diff-like utility? I've heard good stuff about WinMerge if that's what you're looking for.

Basically to compare code between 2 files. example a new version vs old to see what changes were made. (any languages - something to highlight a change in the code.)
We use one at work called File Comparison Utility but it is outdated. I will look into the ones suggested.

Sounds like you want to use diff.

I decided to give WinMerge a try for Windows and Meld for Linux.
Thanks guys for the help. This is exactly what I am looking for. FCU is a cool little program but like I said it is outdated and the upgrade is a pay version and frankly I can't justify paying for a utility like this.

If you're willing to shell out $30, Beyond Compare is really nice.

I am using Beyond Compare 2 for code comparison, too, and it is really cool.
For binary files, i would use AptDiff.

Problem with that is I don't want to pay for something that really is just a process improvement to me more than anything. I can compare my code without the added benefits through HTML-Kit or any text editor.
