Google Summer of Code - 2008

Google Summer of Code, our program to introduce students to open source software development is coming back. In the past three years, we've seen more than 1500 students 'graduate' from this program, working with 2000+ mentors across 90 countries to produce millions of lines of code. We're pleased to have funded more than $10M in open source development through Summer of Code, and we've increased our funding for it this year by another $1M.

Last year alone, more than 800 students successfully completed their projects. Each received $4500 as a stipend and an awesome T-shirt. We're looking forward to welcoming even more student participants and open source projects into the Google Summer of Code community this year.

We're accepting applications from open source projects who'd like to act as mentoring organizations through March 13th, and will begin taking student applications on March 24th. If you're interested in learning more, just subscribe to the program discussion list. We hope to see you there!

I have seen summer of code before, but can't remember if the projects can be submitted by a team or if they are looking for individuals. I think it would be kick ass if DIC could get a team together to work on something... maybe throw the 4500 dollars into on board prizes or something as well as pushing the DIC name out there.

Anyone know if you can do a project with your own hand picked team?

Doh! I found that groups can't work on a project. BUT... DIC could be a mentoring organization and propose the project. So Chris might want to think about sponsoring a project. After all, as a group could also decide on the project, the specs, and which student proposal will be accepted.

:)

Or we could puppet master the student from behind the scenes! Pick one of our own, and use him/her as a front! ;)

Sure, why not. As long as their will is crushed and we are controlling them. The stipend is ours!

Do you have to be a university student or any kind of student? Can you participate in any country? Do you have to be over a certain age to enter? I think thats all of my concerns. It should be called google winter of code over here seeing as summer has already been and gone.

Looks interesting.

EDIT: Well thats uber gay.

Yes. You must be 18 years of age or older by April 14, 2008 to be eligible to participate in Google Summer of Code in 2008.

Google defines a student as an individual enrolled in or accepted into an accredited institution including (but not necessarily limited to) colleges, universities, masters programs, PhD programs and undergraduate programs.

Lmao, Google TOTALLY DEFINED STUDENT CORRECT HIGH-FIVE. :(
