Apply for an internship to game development companies... also I would suggest joining in on sourceforge projects.

These will both give you experience.

Where would you find one. The nearest game company for me is Epic games (Gears of war, Unreal Tournament). Thats in Cary, NC

i find it awkward that you can't find the many MANY sites dedicated to the games industry and getting jobs, and yet you are specific enough to know you want to be a _gameplay_ programmer (which as far as i'm aware is not an actual title)

www.gamesindustry.biz
www.gamasutra.com

Plus there's like, a whole shelf of books at Borders all about game programming with included tools for use for different languages and libraries as well to get ya started~

If you ever find anything written by Andre Lamothé, go with it ^^ he's amazing at game design.

For using windows be sure to read Charles Petzold's programming Win32 API manual just enough so you can make a window for the game~ It's complicated to learn the rest but it makes for a great reference and you don't need to know all that complicated MFC crap >_< *shivers*

Talking with people about game design is much better than a book based solely upon it ^^ honestly, you'll learn much when just talking to people about ideas for games~

To add to this - also check out G4tv. Haven't you seen the millions of commercials dedicated to you being the next great game programmer.

www.google.com then type game programmer. I am willing to bet 1000's of valuable entries magically come available.

Funny story about that I actually called and went through an hour long pre-qualifying interview to be accepted at Westwood College to be a game programmer. One of those stupid commercials. After the hour long Q&A session they popped the question.

It was - I will need 150.00 today to write a letter of recommendation to consider you into our institution.

** Note this is not even an accredited university.

I said I will have to call back and pay him friday because I don't really have the spare cash floating around. (This was a wednesday)

He got real aggressive and was like well friday might be too long to wait. We have limited seats and blah blah blah.

I told him I would pass because I felt paying 150.00 for a letter of recommendation was a little steep considering it was also non-refundable.

He called time and time again.. I ignored the calls.

It's better to just get a Computer Science degree so you can also get other jobs in case Game Programmer doesn't work out >_<

I have been looking for a good resource as well for game programming and at least I haven't come up with a lot. The only really good resource online I would say would be Gamedev.net but aside from that nothing else really.

There is GameDev, Gamasutra, IGN.

Indiegamer.com forums, garage games.

I also recommend listening to Game Development podcasts.
