If you're thinking of becoming a freelancer, you might want to take a look here - its kinda above me yet, I'm not really experienced enough for a lot of the jobs, but there's other stuff which is less advanced for people like me

Yeah it seems to have a pretty good variety, of course it'll be hard to land anything until you have a very solid foundation in whatever you happen to be going towards

They need to comply with the IRS, since they pay you, & you are required to fill out an I-99 form.
If you get a federal tax ID (with a an LLC) then you can provide that rather than your SSN. It's a little bit of work just to hide your SSN, but that is an option.
To tell you the truth, I would be more concerned about a site that pays me (or my business) that doesn't require a taxable ID. It means that they are dodging the IRS, or won't comply with investigations.

I agree- If they don't ask for tax ID or SS it would be like money under the table. And that worries me.

Yeah I've had some success with rentacoder. They always pay on time and it was a great way for me to break into the freelance business. The only problem with these online marketplaces is that you will end up working on projects for far less than they're worth. The best way to combat that is to do a good enough job on those sites to get those particular clients to start working with you off RAC after the project is complete. That's the best way to start building your client list and get a steady income coming in.
